Exploring the Mythical Sigaboy Island

It was a gloomy and drizzly sunday morning when we arrived at Sigaboy. But the uninviting weather didn't stop us to explore the town of Governor Generoso. So we head on to the municipality building of Gov. Gen to meet our tour guide and to finally start our adventure packed day.

After some briefing at the municipal building of Gov. Gen, we started our day long trip and our first stop was the barrio of tibanban. The captivating view of the fishing quarry with the Sigaboy Island on its background is a perfect welcome view to start up our day.

Sigaboy was known as the fishing capital of Davao Oriental. It is a coastal municipality endowed with rich fishery resources. Now, the fishing quarry at barrio tibanban also serves as an added attraction to the tourists and visitors who wants to take a glimpse of the local's simple life on the sea. Featuring the colorful fishing vessels peacefully docking at the calm and serene water of Davao Gulf, with the Sigaboy Island seen from afar, the captivating view of this beautiful landscape is indeed a shutter heaven for photographers and wannabes like me.

Hopping in on one of the fishing boats at tibanban, we sailed for 10 minutes to get to the Sigaboy Island. Legend has it that the name of the Island was derived from the apparitions of the first settlers of the town seeing st. elmo's fire "siga" with the presence of a pig "(ba)boy". The first apparition occurred at this small islet according to the natives. The Islet was called "Sigaboy" by the locals since then.

Sigaboy Island was a favorite place-to-hangout for the locals of GovGen. It is also frequented by the visitors and passers-by who wants to take some tranquil time alone or with family.

We arrived at the island 2 hours before noon so we had much time to explore its shoreline, take some good photographs and have some bonding with each other.

While most of the group is enjoying the warm waters of Sigaboy, a few of us braved the challenging trek towards the summit of this mythical island where lies another attraction, The Parola.

A cliff on the trail over viewing the geographic features of GovGen

The day has become a lot more exciting and challenging as we started ascending the trail towards the centuries old Parola. The first few meters was a lot more difficult since it was a steep trail with the presence of dried leaves and small rocks slipping everytime we try to take a step forward - making it more slippery. We have to make sure that the grip we'll be stepping can hold on to our weight to avoid any accidents from happening. As we continue to ascend, I can't help but stop and take photos everytime there is an opportunity of seeing the beautiful mountainous landscape of GovGen complementing the turquoise blue sea.

The scenic view from the summit is a sight to behold. It was stunning. So stunning that I almost forgot the steep and slippery hike we had. Seeing such an amazing view regenerates my tired body, giving me enough energy to continue the last remaining steps towards the Lighthouse.

The Parola of Sigaboy Island

It's quite an exhausting hike since the trail was a bit uncomfortable but we managed to reach the location of the Parola after more or less 20 minutes of hiking. Being at this centuries old Parola was a remarkable experience. Although the door was locked, it didn't bother us at all. Seeing the Parola up close was already a priceless reward.

As soon as we regained our strength, we slowly descend our way back and joined the rest who are enjoying the beach.

Just before 12 noon, we are already sailing our way back to Tibanban to have our seafood buffet lunch. At 1o'clock, we are already driving our way to our next destination, Cape San Agustin.
